CNC Machine Financing: Should You Lease or Finance Your Machine?
CNC Equipment Is a Major Investment — Make the Right Financing Decision
A CNC machining center can cost anywhere from $50,000 for a basic mill to $500,000+ for a 5-axis production center. For most machine shops, this is the largest capital expenditure they’ll make. Getting the financing structure right can save tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the equipment.
Equipment Loan vs. Equipment Lease: The Core Difference
Equipment loan: You own the machine. You pay down the balance over time and own it free and clear at the end. You can claim Section 179 to deduct the full cost in year one.
Equipment lease: The leasing company owns the machine. You pay to use it. At the end, you return it, renew the lease, or purchase it at fair market or a pre-agreed price (the buyout).
When a Loan Makes More Sense for CNC Equipment
- The machine will be useful for 10+ years
- You want to claim Section 179 (cannot take the full deduction on a true lease)
- You have strong enough credit to get a competitive loan rate
- You want to build equity in equipment that can be used as collateral later
- The machine is general-purpose (not rapidly obsoleted by technology)
When a Lease Makes More Sense
- You need the latest technology and want to upgrade every 3–5 years
- You want lower monthly payments (leases typically run 10–20% lower than loans)
- Your cash flow is unpredictable and you want flexibility
- The machine is for a specific contract and you may not need it long-term
Tax Considerations
With a loan, you own the equipment and can take the full Section 179 deduction in year one — even though you’re financing it. With a true lease, your monthly payments are fully deductible, but you can’t take the Section 179 lump deduction upfront. The best option depends on your current-year tax position — talk to your CPA.
Real Numbers: Loan vs. Lease on a $200,000 CNC Machine
| Equipment Loan (60 mo) | Operating Lease (60 mo) | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly payment | ~$3,900 | ~$3,200 |
| Total paid | $234,000 | $192,000 + buyout |
| Own at end | Yes | No (unless you buy it) |
| Section 179 | Full deduction | Payments only |
